ISLAMABAD, June 5, 2026 – The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Islamabad, Nasrullah Randhawa, has strongly rejected the government’s decision to establish a Federal Council in the federal capital, calling it contrary to democratic values, public representation, and the principles of local autonomy.
In a media statement issued from the JI Islamabad office, Randhawa demanded that the people of Islamabad be granted a truly empowered provincial and local government system, including an elected Chief Minister, elected representatives, and full administrative and financial powers for local bodies.
“The establishment of the Federal Council is against public representation and democracy,” he asserted.
‘Federal Council Violates Constitution, Spirit of Article 140-A’
Randhawa argued that Article 140-A of the Constitution of Pakistan mandates the establishment of local governments and devolution of powers. “Creating an unelected administrative structure under the name of a Federal Council is a deviation from this constitutional requirement,” he said.
He lamented that for decades, the citizens of Islamabad have been awaiting complete political and administrative rights. “Instead of empowering them, their powers are being further restricted through new unelected bodies,” he added.
‘Islamabad Citizens Pay Taxes, Deserve Equal Rights’
The JI Islamabad chief emphasized that the people of Islamabad contribute fully to the national exchequer, pay taxes, and actively participate in the democratic process. “Treating them as second-class citizens is unacceptable in any case,” he stated.
He warned that institutions like the Federal Council would not solve public problems but rather concentrate power within a few bureaucratic circles.
Demands: Withdraw Federal Council, Establish Full Provincial System
Nasrullah Randhawa demanded that the government immediately withdraw the decision to form a Federal Council and instead establish a fully empowered provincial-style system for Islamabad, including:
- An elected Chief Minister
- Effective legislative powers
- A strong local government structure
“This is the only way citizens’ problems can be solved through their elected representatives,” he said.
No Compromise on Democratic & Constitutional Rights
The JI Islamabad Ameer made it clear that no compromise would be made on the democratic, political, and constitutional rights of the people. “If any attempt is made to deprive the citizens of Islamabad of their right to representation and self-governance, Jamaat-e-Islami will raise a strong voice against it on every constitutional, legal, and democratic forum,” he concluded.
