Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed strong reaction over the once again postponement of local government elections in Islamabad, calling it an open robbery of the people’s democratic and constitutional rights. An emergency meeting of Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad has been called today, in which the current situation will be reviewed and a future political and legal course of action will be decided.
Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad, Nasrullah Randhawa, has said that the Election Commission’s notification regarding the postponement of local government elections is a clear negation of democratic values. He alleged that the government and the Election Commission, through collusion, have deliberately postponed the local government elections. He expressed these views while speaking with a delegation of lawyers at the Jamaat-e-Islami office.
On this occasion, Chairman Public Aid Aamir Nawaz and others were also present. Nasrullah Randhawa stated that by postponing the local government elections, the people of Islamabad are being deprived of their constitutional right to representation. The ruling class, fearful of empowering the people, is fleeing from the local government system, while the repeated postponement of elections is a serious violation of the people’s right to self-governance. He further said that keeping unelected bureaucracy imposed is unacceptable under any circumstances. Due to the delay in local government elections, civic problems are continuously increasing, and the people are being deprived of basic facilities. The Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad made it clear that Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad will struggle on both political and legal fronts to protect the rights of the people, and no compromise will be made on the people’s democratic rights under any circumstances.
